U2, Duran Duran oder Depeche Mode – zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre werden diese New Wave-Bands in den USA nicht im Radio gespielt. Doch bei dem kleinen US-Radiosender „WLIR“ in Long Island glaubt man ab 1982 an die neue Devise des Senders: „Dare to be different“. Der wegweisende Sender wird rasch zum Kult. Doch wie jeder wilden Party, droht auch WLIR nach fast einem Jahrzehnt ein allzu jähes Ende.
